Professor Karin Askham

Professor Karin Askham · Rector, CSVPA

The Rector

A maker who ran London’s media school. Then this one.

Karin Askham is a photographic practitioner by origin. The work has sat in leading art institutions, on album sleeves, and in the magazines a fashion student already knows — i-D, The Face, NME, Attitude, Tank.

She spent over five years as Dean of the School of Media at London College of Communication, UAL: photography, sound, film and television, journalism, publishing. Before that, Associate Dean of the Graduate School at London College of Fashion.

The world’s first BA and MA in Fashion Photography were hers. CSVPA is the college she chose to lead. The industry connections she names in the welcome are not a brochure line. They are the rooms she has already sat in.

The work before the title

Four rooms that made the Rector.

The photographer

UAL, before Cambridge

Nearly thirty years in senior university roles. Dean of the School of Media at London College of Communication. Associate Dean of the Graduate School at London College of Fashion.

Fashion photography, first

She founded the world’s first BA and MA in Fashion Photography at UAL — courses now imitated worldwide. The staged moment, taught as a practice.

Beyond the studio

Judging panels for international art and photographic awards. Projects with NGOs, including Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation. The brief is never only the college.

“Many of our staff have experience working within the creative industries, which shapes the structure of our courses so that what we teach is relevant to current and future industry practices. Our industry connections also set us apart.”
