An illustration from CSVPA’s graphic design pathway

CSVPA · Graphic design

Image, type, sequence.

Graphic design, illustration, visual communication. The 2D studio that brands, books and moving image share. Pathway leader: Gavin Jones.

Graphic design is not “good at computers.” It is visual language — how a page, a campaign, or a sequence holds. Illustration is image-making as practice. Visual communication sits between them. CSVPA teaches all three in Cambridge, from Foundation through BA and MA.

Foundation

Graphic Design & Illustration

One year. Graphic design, illustration, animation, film and photography under one 2D roof. Built to take a general portfolio to a university-ready specialism.

Undergraduate

BA Graphic Design · BA Illustration · BA Visual Communication

Three years. Industry briefs, UAL-standard studio culture. Image-making from editorial to sequential and authorial work.

Master’s

Visual Communication

One year. Graphic design, or illustration and animation — a research-led studio with sequential and authorial emphasis. Delivered with Hearst Magazines UK.

Student highlight

Industry events. Then Vivienne Westwood. Then Esquire.

BA Graphics & Illustration students have been recognised at leading industry events. MA students have gone on to work for global brands including Vivienne Westwood and Esquire magazine. The 2D studio is not a waiting room for fashion. It is a practice that already has a job.

Gavin Jones runs the Extended Diploma and Foundation pathway — twenty years in commercial graphic design, Norwich School of Art, his own studio since 2006. Volvo, Cadbury, Tesco, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer. Work that has sat on supermarket shelves, on television, and in the press. The brief in Cambridge is written toward that room.
